Hi Petra,
We spent quite some time living in Sudan and had no problems in terms of safety. In fact, on the contrary, Khartoum is one of the safest cities in Africa. The crime rate is extremely low in the city - and neither me nor my wife worried about walking through the streets at night, which is something I couldn't say about parts of London.
Juba is a slightly different story and the crime rate there is higher (the UN advise people to drive, rather than walk, as much as possible - although the UN does always tend to be fairly jumpy about such things). Reportedly, there has been a rise recently on the number of attacks on foreign-owned hotels there, often by former rebel militias.
I know a lot of expats living quite happily in Darfur, but the situation there is much more volatile: banditry and car-jacking are rife in large parts of the region. Stick to the main cities (Nyala, El-Fasher and El-Geneina) and you should be okay, although crime rate is still higher than you will find elsewhere. Basically, just always monitor Darfur (speak to people in the UN, etc) for the situation there before going.
So, in summary, north Sudan is basically safe, but be more careful about the rest of the country. Also, remember that things can change extremely quickly - especially with this ICC thing hanging over Bashir's head. If the ICC suddenly rule against Bashir, then there is a real danger of a backlash against Western visitors - not from the government, but from anti-West cells that do operate in the country.
Hope this helps - Blake

Hi Petra
I'm medical student from the UK also wanting to spend some time in Khartoum this summer. I'm from the UK and will be spending the end of July to the end of September there. I'd be very grateful if you could share any info you might have about working in a hospital there.
When are going there and which hospital will you be working at?
