Hi there,
Travelling between Cairo to Khartoum is generally very safe, and done by many travellers en-route to the country. Start by taking a train from Cairo to Aswan in Southern Egypt. From there you can take a ferry to Wadi Halfa in northern Sudan (you can't at the moment cross the Egyptian-Sudanese border by land). The ferry leaves Aswan on Monday afternoons and takes around 16 hours to get to Wadi Halfa (single costs around $70 first class or $45 second class). Look out for the temples of Abu Simbel on the west bank!
From Wadi Halfa, it is quickest and cheapest to first take a train, then a bus. The train direct from Wadi Halfa to Khartoum takes around two days. Better: take a train to Abu Hamed and from there a bus to Khartoum.
Hope this helps Blake
